Sometimes, we just need a little bit more space…

There is plenty to consider when choosing to purchase your dream camper, not least deciding on whether a Long Wheelbase (LWB) is more preferable than a Short Wheelbase (SWB)? What differentiates the two is the distance between the front and rear wheels (or axles) – not the length of the whole van. While both have their merits, there’s a compelling case to be made for the LWB camper.

Whether you’re a seasoned road-tripper or a novice explorer, here are three reasons why opting for a LWB camper might just be the best decision you make:

Space, glorious space

The most obvious benefit of having a long wheel base is – no surprises – that the van is bigger. The LWB Transporters that we use at Vanworx are 5.3m long, compared to the 4.9m long SWB, so there is a difference of 40cm between the two. This gives you more living space as well as room for all your kit. So whether you’re traveling solo, with a partner, or with family and friends, having that extra room can make all the difference in ensuring a cosy and enjoyable journey.

Enhanced stability and handling

Longer wheelbase can translate to greater stability on the road because of the greater distance between the two axles. This stability not only enhances safety but also contributes to a smoother and more relaxed driving experience, allowing you to focus on soaking in the scenery rather than wrestling with the steering wheel.

Versatility and adaptability

Another key advantage of LWB campers is their versatility. The extra space opens up a world of possibilities when it comes to customisation and personalisation. Vanworx offers two hugely popular conversion packages for our LWB chassis (our Slipper XL and Chesil conversions), providing you with the flexibility to tailor the interior to suit your specific needs and preferences.

“I’d say across all of the Vanworx campers, the long wheel base Chesil is my favourite. Thev three belted Isofix seats in the back can be turned into an extra wide 130cm RIB bed. You can also fit a full kitchen alongside this, which cannot be achieved in the SWB. For families of four or five, or for people who want that little bit more space, the Chesil camper is such a good solution – having the bigger bed but also retaining the classic kitchen.”
