The best campervan sites tried and tested by the Vanworx team

So we thought that at the start of the summer holidays it would be a good time to pass on our valuable knowledge of our favourite campervan-friendly spots. These campsites have all very much been tried and tested by our team, and offer something for everyone – whether you want peace and quiet, fun for the family, or a place to party. They can all be found in the South West – so it would seem that we at Vanworx know what we like and stick to it!

Lobb Fields, near Saunton Sands, north Devon.

A dog and family friendly campsite just a five minute drive from the golden dunes of Saunton Sands, a great spot for surfing and bodyboarding. The site is made up of three fields on the gentle slopes of a hillside. We recommend either of the top two for great views towards the Taw Estuary and the sea. The site features 180 pitches – 114 with electric hook up. Two large shower/toilet blocks plus laundry facilities, are all very well looked after. A children’s play area, dedicated dog walking route (plus various public footpaths across the fields from the campsite) make this a great all-rounder with a chilled out atmosphere.

Trethias Farm Camping and Caravan Park, Treyarnon Bay, near Padstow, Cornwall.

A small campsite overlooking the rugged cliffs of Cornwall’s north coast, Trethias has a quaint old-fashioned feel to it (in a good way). The site has been run by the same family since the 1950s, who say little has changed other than the modernised but basic shower and loo blocks and washing up facilities. It’s just a 5 minute walk to the lifeguard-patrolled sandy beach, which is dog-friendly all year round, and there is also a dog walking field on site. Trethias only lets you pitch around the edge of the field, leaving the middle of the fields open for children to play and ride their bikes.

Highlands End Holiday Park, Eype, near Bridport, Dorset.

You have to drive through the main holiday park of static caravans to reach the separate area for campervans, caravans and tents. It is definitely worth the wait, as the camping field has the best spot, right on top of the cliffs overlooking the sea. With far reaching views along the Dorset coastline and even as far as Devon, this is a truly beautiful spot, and a brilliant place for stargazing due to the lack of light pollution. The site has all the facilities you would expect from a large holiday park of this kind, including an indoor swimming pool, bar and restaurant and entertainment for kids. Also very dog friendly!

Looe Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, Looe, Cornwall.

Another larger site, this one also has great facilities including a heated outdoor pool with lifeguards, tennis courts, mini golf and play area. The town of Looe is a 5 minute drive away, where you can wander round the working harbour, go crabbing or visit one of its beaches. You can also walk to the sheltered cove of Millendreath – a great spot for rock pooling – from the campsite. The picturesque Polperro and Fowey are both a short drive away. Dogs are welcome at the site.

Sweet Hill Farm, Southwell, Portland, Dorset.

Sweet Hill Farm describes itself as “nearly wild camping,” with only compost toilets and cold water taps in terms of facilities. With its unrivalled position overlooking the lighthouse at Portland Bill and windswept coastline, it is also a great star gazing spot and you have a good chance of seeing owls and kestrels. The owners have their own riding school next door, so you can book lessons during your stay. Coffee and freshly made cakes can sometimes be bought from a visiting food van.

Bredy Farm, Burton Bradstock, Dorset.

Bredy Farm offers another campsite with an idyllic setting – but do not expect it to be peaceful! A party atmosphere is actively encouraged here, with regular live bands and DJs as well as three festivals each summer. An over 18s site, the website warns “weekends get very lively”. A quieter camping experience is offered from Sunday to Thursday. As well as being a working farm, there is a microbrewery and cafe on site, and you can walk to Hive Beach in half an hour. There are two camping areas – an orchard and a meadow – and you can put up your tent or park your campervan wherever you please as there are no marked pitches. A mixture of compost toilets, flushing toilets and coin-operated and free showers are available. The campsite is open from April to September only.
